Title: So. . . How's the weather?
Post by: Matt Gillis on April 06, 2008, 08:16:19 AM
Here in Canada (Nova Scotia to be percise) its actually getting quite temperate! Last week though we had a few snow storms which each dumped like 20-30 cms on us ( 8 inches to a foot) but the snow melted pretty quick due to the warm weather.

Over March I went out west to Alberta, which is where my brother and dad, step-mother etc. are living right now. Its really far north where they live, its just about as far north as Alaska. Anyway, the weather there when I was there was okay, only about -15 degrees C or so ( 5 degrees F) but this winter it was brutal up there and it went down as much as -40 degrees C! (-40 degrees F; its the only point where they are equal).

So how is the weather elsewhere in the world? Any abnormally warm or cold places? How's the weather for Charlie while he is tirelessly doing interviews?

Never thought we'd resort to talking about the weather in here, but hey, its because we are just that cool  :hat (yes, pun intended)

Gettin' pretty nice out on Long Island.  Actually, it was pretty crappy for a while, but once Charlie got here it seemed to turn.  I guess he's got the power of bringing nice weather with him.

for the last 3 days the temperature was between 0 and 20 celsius with partial wind/clouds/snow/rain/fog/sun...

and last tuesday we had a thunderstorm with hail

and has anyone heard about all the shitty weather down in the south recently? i don't know why, but the southern US is just a magnet for strange weather phenomena happening like 20 times in a year.

It's in preparation for hell freezing over down there when either a black or a woman is elected president.

Interesting theory. Hell is most likely located somewhere in the US, it just has to be.

Quite possibly in a Wal Mart bathroom.

I could be mistaken, but I swear I remember it  :lol

It's nothing against Canada.  There was a thread on DTF that same day about Rush and some guy responded with "Who?" just to be an idiot.  I responded with what Dimitrius just said, also to be an idiot.  Then I came here and found this thread, so apparently we thought it was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

They were about 9,000-10,000 fans Friday night and I didn't see a single soul with a DT shirt, but that's because almost everybody had a Rush shirt.

*Ahem* it's eh , thank you very much. I'm pretty sure Fonzy didn't come from Canada  :P

But seriously, what I've noticed is that Canadian's don't say "eh" (or at least not that much) UNLESS they are around foreign people, especially Americans. Not sure whether it is a subconcious thing or whether it's just us making some sort of satire to prove how readily some people (not just americans) are to jump down your throat without taking into account their own sterotype's, I'm not sure, but no, we are normal people, and we don't live in igloos.

Also according to my roommate, in Canada the weather's better, fast food tastes better, breakfast cereal tastes better, nobody is ever late for anything, and there are no rude people.   Clearly only idiots live somewhere other than Canada.  I wouldn't be surprised if he thought Canada single-handedly defeated Hitler and won World War II while the rest of the Allies sat around twiddling their thumbs.

It's a good thing I don't base all my opinions about Canadians on him.   :D

Basically everywhere outside of America (especially Europe) have a higher standard for just about everything. Also, IMO, we tend to be internationally looked down upon nowadays.

A perfect example of that is "America" by Pain of Salvation.

Well, I know we all all joking anyway, but Canada does have some serious perks (as a lot of nations do, including the US). As far as your roommate goes, no, don't only base your opinion off him  :lol I have met some Canadians that I would be ashamed to go to another country!

And for the stuff he says, its almost all untrue as far as I can concern, EXCEPT for two of them: 1) nice people 2) world war I

Basically, in world war I, Canada was still "obligated" as a dominion under Britain, so they were demoted to a lot of the "bitch work" and had to do a lot of the really harsh battles in the war. We actually had a lot of people die and sacrifice their lives for that reason. Anyway, I won't get into it, I'm just saying. Also, although we played our part, other nations worked and died for their country too, so saying any death was undeserving is very wrong for whoever says it.

And seriously, in Canada, we have A LOT of nice people. I'm from the maritimes (the east of Canada basically), and we are infamous for our generosity and "niceness". The rest of Canada are nice too, but I love living here because there are a lot of nice people. No, not everyone is nice, and a lot of people can give others a hard time -- there are assholes everywhere. But, in general, people do really nice things and its a good atmosphere.

But as far as I know, our cereals, often imported from american companies, taste the same!  :rollin

I did not know that.

*strokes chin that he just now realizes he forgot to shave*

I didn't mean to imply that Canada didn't do their share in the war effort or that a lot of Canadians didn't give their lives to defend freedom.  I think you knew that, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to clarify just in case.

And seriously, in Canada, we have A LOT of nice people. I'm from the maritimes (the east of Canada basically), and we are infamous for our generosity and "niceness". Well, my roommate's effects are definitely counteracted by the existence of Rush and James LaBrie and a few other cool Canadians that I can't think of right now.   :P

It's just annoying because this guy is a huge whiner, and every time he complains about something, he'll make up a reason why it was better in Canada.  If a TV show is on too early, it's not because he's in a different time zone, it's because Canada's TV schedule is better.  If he has to wait in line at a fast food place, it's not because he went during lunch rush, it's because Canada's fast food service is better.  If a girl turns him down when he asks her out, it's not because he's an annoying person, it's because Canada's women are better.  While there may be a bit of truth to the stuff he says, he blows everything so out of proportion, that after a while it gets kind of insulting.  Helloooo...non-Canadian here.  You're kind of pissing me off by saying that everything in my country is trash compared to everything in yours.

I mean, nationalism is good.  It's good to have some kind of emotional connection with your homeland.  But...you know...some people apparently go overboard.

That turned out to be quite a lengthy rant.   :blush

The rest of Canada are nice too, but I love living here because there are a lot of nice people. No, not everyone is nice, and a lot of people can give others a hard time -- there are assholes everywhere. But, in general, people do really nice things and its a good atmosphere.

Yeah, your roomate sounds mildly irratating  :lol I know this guy (we used to be friends, but we are barely aquaintances anymore), and he is the most irritating person you would ever meet in your life. And no, that is not an understatement at all. It'd take me probably 4 days before I could explain all of his "annoyingness", but to summarize, I'll just say a very short conversation he and a friend of mine had while they were walking home from school:

Friend: Man, my day today was pretty good. *insert approx. 1 min conversation about his day*
Annoying guy: Man, don't talk about your day, that's a chick thing to do (yes, he is extremely sexist AND racist)

*next day on way home from school again*

Annoying guy: "Man, my day today was so horrible" *insert 15 minutes of bitching about his day*
Friend: I thought you said talking about your day was only for "chicks"?
Annoying guy: No I didn't (and he'll deny anything just to be right).

So obviously, we do have annoying people in Canada  :lol

And don't feel bad, because, while Canada and the US ARE different, they are different in various ways, And while Canada is better than America for some stuff, America is better than Canada for others (and other countries beat us both at a lot of stuff!). But I'm pretty sure more than a few of our channels come from the states, women will turn you down if they dislike you no matter where they are from, and fast food places are busy whether you are in Canada, America, or India (or anywhere. . .ia).

Maybe we should start a "culture" thread, so that way we can learn about how different people do different things around the world. I always find it neat when someone doesn't have a certain product, custom, etc. that I have in my country.

Oh, and to veer this thread wildly back on topic: Today the temperature peaked at 22 degress celcius! And yesterday, at a spot in the sun, it was 26! It'd weird to have such awesome weather, and still be able to find snow in certain places  :hmm

That is the single most obnoxious and unnattracive quality that anyone can have.  I mean, I'm probably guilty of it from time to time just like the rest of us, but I've known people who do it all the time.  Luckily, they weren't my friends, but you have my sympathy.  Can't stand those people.

And while Canada is better than America for some stuff, America is better than Canada for others (and other countries beat us both at a lot of stuff!).

Exactly.  :tup

This sounds like a cool idea.  Even within my own country, I find it interesting that people out west have never heard of big restaurants back east.  It's also interesting what the local slang can be.  Different people from different places make for fascinating conversations.

It's warm enough for a t-shirt again!  And sunny!  I feel like breaking out into song!

Today is a BEAUTIFUL day here! Lately our weather has been so weird  ??? First, we had a snowstorm and got 15 cms (half a foot) of snow last week, then it went back to being really warm, and I think oneday it got to be like 26 degrees C in the same week!

Regardless, right now its about 21 degrees and It is really sunny out!  ;D

This past week was just flat out cold and rainy.

It's kinda strange how 50 degrees F is cold for spring, yet really warm for winter.

Yeah we do!

And about the weather, it's gonna rain today, yet again!. I swear that on the 5 months we've had so far this year we've only had like 3 days of pure Caribbean weather. Rest of it has been cold and rainy,

That's a good idea.  You buy the booze, and I'll hire the stripper.

Oh, and the weather is beautiful today.  Warm, sunny, nice cool breeze...summer.  Gotta love it.

Gah, I envy you  :P Oh well, I can't really complain. Over the past 4 or 5 days we've had nice weather -- sunny and around 17-25 degrees celcius! It's so hard to believe that around the 12th or so (of this month, May) we got 15 cms of snow  :o
