Title: Your favourite live album?
Post by: nimrod on March 01, 2008, 01:07:56 PM
Some people prefer studio albums, some people prefer live albums, I personally like my live albums. But which would you say is your favourite live album? Mine has to be Rush's Live In Rio, the recording really captures the live atmosphere and obviously it's Rush so it's gonna be good...

I'm not a big fan of live albums in general so for me a good live album is one where the songs are presented differently, such as acoustic sets.

I think the live CDs that I listen to most are Score (because I was there) and Marillion's Live Unplugged at the Walls because of the beautiful versions of the songs that they do and also the Radiohead cover, Fake Plastic Trees. I also love the way they redid Alone Again In the Lap of Luxury - so different and so awesome!

How early did you have to book in advance? I also heard some people got there to queue up ridiculously early...

My favorite one is Score from Dream Theater... it's pure magic.

Iron Maiden's Rock in Rio is pretty great and Score is awesome too but I think my favourite is Transatlantic - Live in Europe.

People on the old DT message board were on the board before tickets went on sale just waiting to snap them up. I bought mine from a guy who did that, then couldn't go.

We were at the meetup at Twins before the show and since it wasn't GA, but seated, there was no rush to line up early.. though we did get in line in plenty of time before doors opened anyway out of habit.

I went in w/ one of my friends, and we walked by Radio City to check out if there was a line, and there was NOBODY there, so we decided to go get some pizza... then we walked back to Radio City, only to realize that the line actually started around the corner and we just didn't see it the first time. :d'oh:

Didn't really matter though, as it was seated.

Another interesting fact: I custom made a shirt for that show with the Majesty logo on it, and I ran into some other dude who also had a Majesty shirt on, and talked to him for a few minutes.  I didn't realize it at the time, but it turns out that other dude was Weymolith.

I don't like life albums... but not because of sound quality issues, but because I always get depressed cause I cant be there myself.

Yeah, I'm mostly a lurker over at MP.com... have been for about 6 years, so I don't really know a lot of MP forumers that well.  Although, since that show, I've gotten to know Wey a little better.

My favourite live albums are the ones that sound most like studio albums, because I generally hate live albums. I'm too much of a perfectionist. I hardly listen to live albums anyway. Favourites-
KISS Alive 3
DT - Budokan

that's about it

As said, I don't care much for live albums that much, but Score is done well, and I appreciate Live After Death.

Iced Earth - Alive In Athens
Iron Maiden - Rock In Rio
Dream Theater - Live At Budokan/Score

Kamelot's One Cold Winter's Night and Blind Guardian's Live are also great live albums.

Score... great performance and I was there

Metallica- S&M... wonderful performance from the band and nice work by Michael Kamen

Led Zeppelin- How The West Was Won... Zep is probably on top of my "Bands I Wish I Could See" list and this set exemplifies why. Amazing energy and some sweet jams throughout. Sure Page could be sloppy, but it still sounded :hat as hell

It's a three way tie, funnily enough between my three favourite bands.

Arriving Somewhere by Porcupine Tree
Live Scenes from New York by Dream Theater
The Roundhouse Tapes by Opeth

All three amazing...

Omg, I forgot to mention The Roundhouse Tapes from Opeth, I'm gonna kill myself. Bye... :(

No, not that Weymolith.  I think he was talking about Weymolith from DreamTheaterForums.com.

And, if we're allowed to pick DVD's, Live at Pompeii

Generally I don't come across live albums I don't like. For those who know my habit I just generally love a good live show. I really can't pick just one or two and say they are my favorite.
