I don't recall in which thread I read about it and who posted it and I'm too lazy to look; but the message basically was that one reason why prog is so hard to catch for the mainstream population is that you can't really dance to it.

I think you can!!!! It depends on what you term "dancing" - prog'd be much more prone to being danceable than e.g. moshing with punk, wouldn't it? Maybe the only thing that's different to dancing prog is that you have to anticipate the rythm changes; but hey, that's the cool thing about it in the first place, isn't it  Cool

I lap dance in 5/8 exclusively, actually.

Yeah, I think I had said that

What I mean is that for MOST people, it can get impossible. As a music student I have a fair understanding of rhythm (its pretty good, but I'm not a drummer, so I'm not as good as I could be I suppose) but even with me I can have trouble predicting rhythm changes and things. I know that they are coming (thanks to wonderful cadences!) but you never know whether that 9/8 riff will go into a 3/4 breakdown or a 12/8 bridge; you know?

When I did up a paper on it, it included a lot more than just the "dancing" factor obviously, but I just said it because that is one of the main reasons. People like those beats on 2 and 4, and MAN is it hard to break people out of that. Some people just claim it hurts their head and they can't get into it. Maybe we can dance to a DT song when its in an odd time, but I think that's more because we are experienced now, and people who hear a song like "Dance of Eternity" for example would be absolutly screwed if they heard it. And its more about the time sig changes than it is about the odd signatures, which is another reason why the aforementioned song would be so difficult to dance to.

Anyway, I didn't mean to offend any 5/8 lap dancers out there

I normally don't dance, but I can head-bang in all kinds of weird time signatures so that excuse really won't work to well for me.

While we were recording song#7 on the new CD, we couldn't stop dancing to it! Especially the first verse about Bazuzu! We were jumping up and dancing  on the chairs!

I lap dance in 5/8 exclusively, actually.

Anyhow, I can't dance to prog. But I don't think that's the reason it's so hard to catch for the mainstream.
