it's one of my fav bands!

the first album I had was the divine wings of tragedy.
my favorite songs are:
- the odyssey: because it is just beautiful  Cry
- church of the machine: because it sounds like ayreon
- through the looking glass: because it sounds like dream theater
- the serpent's kiss: because it is so nice to jump around to it  (emoticon should
   resemble bouncing)

I've seen them 5 times during the last half year; twice as main act and 3 times opening for dt; the first show in vienna in october was the coolest because it was an almost 3 hrs set & they played the odyssey; the last one in munic this february was the funniest because of the after show party that lasted until 6 sth. in the morning

Likes:
       -Lots of energy
-They can pull of mellow/sweet and heavy/evil in the same song
-Most of Russell Allen's vocals are awesome
       -Candlelight Fantasia

Dislikes:
       -Cheesy lyrics
-Not enough variation...too many songs sound too similar
-Allen sings growly too much and doesn't show off his voice enough

Overall, I like 'em more than I dislike 'em.  The Divine Wings of Tragedy is a fantastic album.

I like almost everything!

I think Symphony X is a great band, musically and lyrically.

The only thing that I didn't like (or at  least that I can recall off the top of my head), were the drums on the last album. I liked them most of the time, but it seemed liked everytime I actually "heard" them, they were doing some cheesy, cliche metal thing or something. But that's just my opinion, and overall I thought the album was awesome and very deserving of the band's great reputation.

nothing to really dislike, except that they can be a bit cheesy. but not as cheesy as Rhapsody (of Fire)

anybody (and band for this matter) who attaches "of fire" to the end of every sentence and phrase is an incredibly overblown cheese-whiz, and needs a serious reality check.

not the case with SX

Maybe they should include a reality check after their soundcheck?

Seriously though, a friend of mine is in love with them I think. He's got great taste in music usually, and he's a great musician, but I see his fondness of Rhapsody as a major crack in the edifice

Anything involving Fantasy takes a willing suspension of disbelief; that's entirely what you do when reading a fiction novel. But I mean, just because the lyrical content is cheesy doesn't mean the music has to be cheesy. This is also why Symphony X isn't cheesy, but why 90% of Power Metal bands are (in my opinion anyway).

I'm never been a fan of Symphony X because I'm neither fond of Romeo's guitar tone and nor the rough vocals of Allen.  However, I bought the Odyssey as I am a big fan of Homer's Odyssey and I absolutely blown away by the title track.  That's an epic masterpiece!

Likes Russell Allens vocals

Dislikes : Lyrics are awful
Romeo's runs ( if i want to hear Yngwie I'd rather listen to the real thing)
The production on their albums always seems a bit thin for my taste

Love: Russell Allen (both his vocals in general and his live performances)

Dislike: I find their material to be completely generic... I love listening to The Odyssey (song) and a couple of tracks from Paradise Lost and don't feel the need to listen to anything else

just made a connection!

Rod Tyler is Symphony X's version of Charlie! Except Charlie's a better singer.

Love practically everything except their lastest, Paradise Lost.  Don't care for the harshness in Russell Allen's vocal style on this album.   Best are V Mythololgy and The Odyssey, IMO.

True, but that doesn't mean it automatically makes it the best song on the album, regardless if it's your favorite.
