nick's post:

Funny thing is I've met Portnoy 4 times, and only 1 time was at a Dream Theater concert.

First time was at an Yngwie Malmsteen show in Allentown, in which Derek Sherinian was on keys. That was back on May 10th, 2006. After the show MP and DS were just hanging around and chatting.

Second time was at the Porcupine Tree show in Philly on May 23rd, 2007. I spotted MP during the show, and then afterwards he went back stage and I was lucky enough to as well. One of the coolest experiences in my life. It was just my group of 5, maybe 4 other fans, and PT and MP and we chilled in the green room for about an hour.

Then I met him down in the family and friends area after the last Dream Theater show in Philly, that was August 26th, 2007. After chilling down there for a bit we all decided to go out to the tourbus and I was able to get on Dream Theater's tourbus and I had a conversation with John Myung.

And then of course there was this last time with Symphony X.

Funny thing is I've now met Portnoy 4 times and I've only met another member of the band once.

Okay, well... in addition to that...

2004-09-01 - McBrain Damage, an Iron Maiden tribute band headed by Nicko McBrain played Allentown. After the show I met the entire band, including Nicko.

2004-09-20 - Tesla. I was in a group of 6 for this show, and 3 of my friends had after show passes. So the rest of us went out to the parking lot afterwards to wait for our friends and JK, the singer from Tesla came across the parking lot with his wife headed back towards the venue. So we stopped him, got an autograph and pictures, and I had mentioned that it was cool to meet him out here as our three friends were waiting inside for the band. So he basically said come along and got us downstairs were we met the rest of the band!

2005-08-27 - Did the meet and greet with Symphony X. Coolest moment was when I complemented Russell Allen on his work with Star One and on or two other projects and he seemed really taken back that I had interest that deep into his career and the whole band was just very nice.

2005-11-30 - My old band opened for George Lynch. We met George's band, however not George as he was an egotistical picky bitch.

2006-03-01 - My old band opened for Overkill and so we got to talk to those guys a lot.

2006-11-03 - Met Scott Rockenfield and Michael Wilton of Queensryche at a Sam Ash meet and greet.

2008-03-29 - Met Joe Lynn Turner (ex-Deep Purple, ex-Rainbow) and Vinny Appice (Heaven and Hell, Dio).

I've also met members of Blackfield and Redemption.

Pictures with some of these people can be found at the "People We've Met" section of www.wpapu.com.

nick, you're a lucky guy  Grin great stories !!  Shocked Shocked Shocked

I met all dt members after the show in linz last june. that's were I also met charlie and the other dominici guys. what an incredible evening.  Grin Grin

I also met mp and jr at a gas station on the highway in the middle of germany at 1:30 in the morning.  Grin sometimes things are just meant to be

almost every band I ever saw playing @ planet music in vienna cannot leave the venue without having had a chat with me   the thing is there's no real backstage exit and buses have to park in front of the main entrance. so I had the pleasure to hang with e.g. spock's beard, symphony x or billy sheehan and tony macalpine.

every single one of these guys has always been really nice and patient and willing to sign my stuff and take pictures and anwer my silly questions; apart from the kickass music that's why I love attending prog concerts

But yeah, there was more like 20 of us back there, and most of them told my boy he looked like the kid in the FOABP video.

Ah, yes, and Blackfield I didn't get passes Sad Good thing we stopped Eran Mitleman and asked him for his autograph, or I'd have had nothing.

It was a good thing I reminded Nick that he had Redemption's artwork from their CD in his pocket, he wasn't even going to stop and get it signed!

I've met a few musicians, but no overly famous ones, prog ones or had "huge" conversations with any of them.

My only contribution would probably be that I played in one of Rick Waychesko's bands for a bit; he instructed us. We were a jazz band, but I was also in a jazz/funk fusion band that he said I should go into. For those of you who don't know (so pretty much everyone  ) he was in Tower of Power for years and years who were and still are (to my knowledge anyway) a really influential band that has laid down some serious jazz history.

But that's all I've got  Oh well, I'm appreciative for that much at least. Perhaps I will meet Charlie before long? Who knows

So, I've met (back in the 80s) most of Faster Pussycat, by accident, when waiting for Motley Crue. Met Fred Coury of Cinderella back then too. Got all of those people's autographs on my handmade acid washed jeans.

Also met Steve Hogarth from Marillion and also Pete Trewavas and talked to them both for varying lengths of time (Steve for much longer, since I talked to him for quite awhile after the first Marillion show that I saw - John Wesley opened for them, and I saw him after the whole thing around 3am in teh streets of Philly, LITERALLY.. .walking in front of the tourbus and directing it's tight turns in those narrow streets I didn't even know he was a live additional PT member at the time, but I told him I really enjoyed his solo stuff and shook his hand)... and met Steven Rothery briefly.. I don't remember if we met Ian Mosely or not.. I'll check the autographed flyer that I asked them to sign (it was my midde boy's 10th birthday and he came to the concert as part of his gift, so they told him happy birthday after the show and gave him a pick Cheesy).

Met All of Porcupine Tree two times, I think.. or three? and talked to each of them for varying lengths of time. One time I asked Colin Edwards what his sly smirk is about and he said "I could tell you but I'd have to kill you!"

The last time was when the FOABP video had been released the morning of the Virginia Tech school shootings, so they recalled the video.. then they used it at the concert, so Steven Wilson came over to me and my middle son and asked my boy if he understood the point of the video (in regards to the guns and his actual message). That was amazing and my respect for him has been at 100% ever since (not that it ever had any reason NOT to be!)

Met the keyboardist of Blackfield very briefly. Met a couple of people from Three, and a couple of people from Redemption (wouldn't have known it was them if it wasn't for Nick Smiley )

Met and spoke briefly to MP, JR, and JP at the Score aftershow party at RCMH. Also met Chris Jericho there and got his autograph for my boys, who were wrestling fans at the time. Met MP at that first Marillion concert while waiting for Steve Hogarth. Also met MP at at least one of those PT concerts... the one I brought my boy to, I was given a signed promo copy of Systematic Chaos, signed personally to me by MP Cheesy (It wasn't even released yet!) Also met the entire band (except JLB, if I recall correctly) at that aftershow family and friends thing last October, and then when the place was emptying out we heard one of the wives say "lets go to the bus" and everyone agreed, so we tagged along for a minute, climbing on and sitting down up front till I realized that chances were, EVERYONE but us was friends or family, and they were probably trying to get away from us and end the evening ....

But in that time we got to hear JM telling his son to stop playing with the tour bus doors, and told him how much we enjoyed their music/album/playing or whatever, and he nodded and said "thanks guys, I really appreciate that" and then we got off the bus and got outta there...

There may be a few more instances in there but without seeing my concert list in front of me, they all blur together these days. I definitely have pics or autographs from most of those times though!

Of the people backstage at Porcupine Tree, 5 were Porcupine Tree, 5 were Mike Portnoy and his posse, 5 were our group, and another 4 or 5 were other fans. That accounts for the 20 people you mentioned.

And John Myung said more than that. :p

THAT is a fantastic story!  That must've been a cool experience.  It's always nice to be able to respect your favorite musicians as human beings, too.   Cheesy

I've met the various members of PT once and Portnoy twice, all courtesy of Jen

I have to say, hanging out and listening to Mike Portnoy and Steven Wilson talk about metal was just an incredibly cool experience. Almost as cool as watching Nick get stood up by John Wesley Tongue

I'll just say for the record that I was sane enough not to try and invade the DT family tourbus that night in Philly

Only met DT, on January 30. Was told I could come in to sound check, so before soundcheck I had a talk with MP and JR (mostly about the action figurrrrs I believe )
Had a brief talk with JM, although he actually did all the talking
Had a brief talk with JLB too (he was jokingly annoyed about the iPod video)
Didn't get to talk to JP at all except a short "hi" at the meet n greet afterwards.

The most memorable one was when I went to take a piss at the opeth show in new york. I had my six degrees shirt on and some guy behind me said 'nice shirt' and i almost turned around with a 'yea thanks asshole' type of comment and it was  MP. He then told me about how they are going to play a show at Radio City on April 1st and I said he's full of shit it's fool's day but he said 'for real son' so I went to that show and we all had a great time. the end.

You never know.  I mean, if MP ever starts drinking again, he might find himself wandering into the wrong bathroom.

You cannot pee standing up unless you have to piss like a racehorse, as a girl, and even then as SOON as you stop pushing with those lower abdominals, you're gonna get trickling down your legs.

Screw that.

Hmm... Met the guys in Opeth a bunch of times... My friend's outgoing message on his voicemail is actually Peter Lindgren saying "This is Peter from Opeth... you're calling Justin's phone.  Leave a fucking message, RIGHT NOW!"
And Martin Lopez tried to buy weed off of us...

Met everyone in Lacuna Coil back when they opened for Opeth in '03 or '04, and even got to hang out with Christina for about 10-15 minutes...

Met all the guys in DT several times, including JM on DT's tour bus (w/ Nick and Jen), JP on two separate occasions at local Long Island bars, and once again randomly walking down St. Catherine's Street in Montreal, JR at a Porcupine Tree concert and MP at a Rush concert and then again at a Porcupine Tree concert.  (Also met Derek at a local show, and Chris Collins at one of his band's shows around here)

Ran into Russell Allen and Jason Rullo from Symphony X at a DT/Queensryche show about 5 years ago... talked to Russ for a few minutes - really nice guy.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head
