taxi costs 45 bucks plus tunnel toll of 5, if you take the bus from jfk it's 15 bucks and is pretty clean and fast. subway will take you forever, or 1 hour though depending on the time of the day probably faster than the bus or taxi.

Subway is fine if i'm with someone who knows what they're doing.

Not so with videoboy and webmistress trying to make their way through reality land.

Also, I heard good things about that holiday inn so will prolly spend both nights there.

I'm completely shitting myself though that the plane ticket is $200 and the hotels are $500 total about.

I can't even fathom spending that much for a couple of days in the city.

This better be orgytastic and I don't want to be straight-sober for the duration, dammit!

ok i require a hotel safe clean and in walking distance. i think i need to refer to my map earlier in the thread.

also, if i fly in which is likely, i'm landing at jfk - it's just cheapest by a lot, can't help it. hopefully that's not gonna be a bitch for transportation... i tend to prefer taxis.... but not spending too much money

JFK to anywhere in Manhattan is a flat $45 fee ( this does not include tips and tolls)

as much as I'm looking forward to this I don't think I'll be getting inebriated as I'll have to manage public transportation to get home after the show

problem is, i'm technically allergic to alcohol. Apparently I lack an enzyme necessary to process it.

But I've carefully constructed a tolerance to Svedka that I can use to my advantage once in awhile - anything else turns into total alcohol poisoning though Sad

I just stay away from alcohol for the most part, and NEVER drink anything but svedka, cuz it's like slamming liquid draino otherwise. I'll just be in the hospital in an hour.

Is that what it is? Apparently my father was "allergic" to alcohol, and so am I... for years I wondered how common that was, so when I went to the hospital to get my tubes tied in 2003 I mentioned it to my anesthesiologist... he was the one that told me it was his understanding that people who are seemingly allergic to alcohol actually lack an enzyme necessary to process it.. he had no more details though.

What happens to me is, if I go a long long time (many months) having no alcohol, then I can drink several drinks in a night and feel like a normal drunk person would (I guess)... but if I have a few drinks a night for several days straight, I begin to feel like I never really get sober, and it feels like my kidneys ache. I end up feeling sort of bad for weeks.

That's why, now that I have one alcohol type that I can at least drink and not get sick from immediately, I tend to drink for a few weeks then take a few months off.

Now I have to look up.. what you said!

holy cow, this might explain my newfound lung issues!

"Patients with aldehyde dehydrogenase deficiency accumulate high levels of acetaldehyde after consuming alcohol. Acetaldehyde has been blamed for asthmatic reactions to alcohol in up to half of Japanese asthma patients. Sometimes histamine within alcoholic beverages has been blamed for allergic reactions."

ask the immunologist  Grin

do you happen have any asian (esp. indian or japanese) ancestors?? in these populations reduced or lacking genetic expression of alcohol dehyrogenase is pretty common, and as far as I know it is a heridtary condition.

I am about 75% Swedish and 25% German, with maybe 1% or less somewhere in there supposedly maybe Native American. That's on my dad's side, who was supposedly also allergic to alcohol.

I never saw an immunologist before, I'm glad to know that's who to see!

I am an immunologist and for your health's sake you wouldn't want any serious medical consulting from me
I'm just a researcher and no md and what I told you is just out of my general pool of knowledge but has only marginally got to do with immunology.. anyway, I doubt there's any cure to not tolerating alcohol, but don't pinpoint me on that, as I said, I'm not a physician

So, are you coming to NYC or not? Isn't it getting awfully late to book a flight around the world?
